The new Canon PowerShot SX20IS is a new mega-zoom model that has just been release in mid-August this year (2009). It is the successor to the very successful SX10IS model that has been reining the bestseller's charts for quite some time now.

One of the new features found on the Canon PowerShot SX20IS is that it can record HD videos at 720p. This model uses a 28-50mm wide-angle lens that has a 20x optical zoom. The zoom can be used while recording videos. It also has a 12.1MP image sensor, and like most new Canon models, uses a DIGIC 4 processor that produces excellent image quality.

On the back of the camera, you will find a 2.5-inch LCD display that can be rotated at various angles. There is also a button that is dedicated for recording videos that lets you record movies with a push of the button.

As a successor to the SX10IS, the new Canon PowerShot SX20IS did not disappoint. It retains many of the great features of the older model (user-friendly interface) and tops it up with a couple more. The image quality is quite stunning considering its price range. They were even better in many ways than those taken on some of my more expensive DSLR cameras.

At first glance, the Canon PowerShot SX20IS may seem a little bulky, but it is actually surprising comfortable to hold. It has a good, comfortable grip and feels very durable. With the looks of this new model, it looks like Canon is set to rein the mega-zoom camera market for a long time to come. Currently, the Canon PowerShot SX20IS retails at around $399 each.

The Canon Power Shot S90 is a compact, lightweight digital camera that features user-friendly controls, manual and semi-manual shooting modes, and a wide angle f2 lens that provides very good low-light photo quality. Weighing just seven ounces, it offers ten megapixels, making it ideal for above-average amateur photographers. The camera design includes a small, pop-up flash as well as a control ring around the lens that can be used to adjust aperture, ISO, shutter speed, focus, exposure compensation, zoom, or white balance.

On the downside, the Canon PowerShot S90 offers average performance. It suffers from shutter lag and cannot offer the same fast shooting modes as a higher-priced digital SLR camera. It lacks HD movie capture capabilities. The zoom is also short, and there is no optical zoom while recording. There is some barrel distortion at the widest position on the lens. In addition, there is no optical viewfinder on the Canon PowerShot S90, and it takes a while to power up the camera before you can start shooting.

When I first visited the camera section of my favorite electronic's store I felt quite overwhelmed by the quantity and variety of cameras offered. My main purpose was to obtain high quality pictures to post over the many websites that sell stock photo, so I really knew what I was looking for: a good camera that produced decent stock pictures for a reasonable price.

In order to grab my attention my selected camera had to somehow beat the crowd. I had really heard good things about the G9 PowerShot because I frequent a photography forum and was aware of the fact that many professional photographers where eagerly anticipating it's arrival on the market.

I must say that I am not a fan of large, bulky cameras so at a first visual approach the PowerShot G9 was of a nice compact size. When holding it in my hand the grip felt firm and the camera felt sturdy. However, it didn't fit well in my shirt's pocket and it only came with a neck strap while I am particularly fond of hand straps. From an esthetical point of view, this camera was visually appealing and somehow brought my memories back to some older camera styles seen in the past.

Now to the main facts. The Canon PowerShot G9 offered 12.1 resolution megapixels and a 6X zoom. The LCD screen looked wonderful being 3.0 inch large. The RAW file format is great to produce better higher quality digital pictures when compared to JPEG. With an ISO of 400, the camera promised a good outlook on pictures taken in low lit areas, however, I heard from friends that when enlarged pictures may appear a bit too grainy for my taste.

The best feature, at least for me since I am still at an amatorial level, was the fact that the camera took care of the focus, exposure and flash by its self. The camera also offered Optical Image Stabilization which in short means hopefully no more blurry, unstable pictures. This is great for those quick shots where you do not have that much time to concentrate on picture quality.

Canon PowerShot is not all about pictures, it actually can shoot high resolution movies as well and for up to an hour! While this is a plus, I would consider a big minus the fact that the 32 MB memory card included was very likely able to hold barely 5 pictures, creating the need to by a larger one.

When I actually got to try the camera I was amazed by the number of special scene modes it had. My current camera had about 7 while Canon PowerShot offered about 23! Some of them that I found particularly appealing were: Foliage, Kids and Pets, Underwater (yes, the camera is water proof!) Aquarium, and Beach. I did however, miss the sunset feature as sunsets are really one of my big favorites things to shoot. In exchange, I liked the color swap option which allows to select a color and have it replaced by another one of your choice for some real cool special effects.

The advanced face detection mode was interesting and a completely new feature for me. It is supposed to keep on focus multiple faces with the opportunity to focus primarily on one. This is great for those bithday parties and weddings.

With so many buttons and features I must admit I found the camera pretty self explanatory to use, saving me time from peeking at the manual every moment.

Since I own this camera now, my pictures seem to have upgraded from an amatorial level to a professional one.
My family and friends are astonished about my work but I realize that the I cannot take fully credit, it is mostly thanks to the wonder of nature and the advance of technology.

For less than $500 the Canon Powershot G9 12 Megapixel Digital Camera is a great buy. I have to admit that the camera was about 100 dollars more than what I really was expecting to spend, however, I see this as a long term investment since many of my stock photos shot with this camera were finally actually bought!

DIGIC 4 Image Processor
Canon’s proprietary DIGIC Image Processors have long set its cameras apart from the competition, and the new DIGIC 4 sets the bar even higher. Faster, more accurate noise reduction delivers better image quality, even at high ISO speeds.
I SAPS Technology
is an entirely original scene-recognition technology developed for digital cameras by Canon. Using an internal database of thousands of different photos, I SAPS works with the advanced DIGIC 4 Image Processor to improve focus speed and accuracy, as well as exposure and white balance.

A new Face Self-Timer automatically detects an increase in the number of faces and makes the appropriate adjustments. For instance, to include photographer’s face in a group shot, there’s no need to rush in. Just put the camera on a stand or tripod, and specify Face Self-Timer, and the camera will wait for the photographer’s face to get on-camera before it takes the shot. Motion Detection now tracks moving subjects in a much larger range, and the new Servo AF retains focus on a moving subject after the shutter button is pressed halfway -- allowing you to wait for the perfect shot without refocusing. Also, Face Detection and Motion Detection are markedly improved.
Canon Products Intelligent Contrast Correction
DIGIC 4 also makes possible the new I -Contrast (Intelligent Contrast Correction) system, which controls the compensation level in pixel units to brighten dark areas while leaving bright areas unchanged for better images where the main subject is dark, and more natural transition. The Power Shot SX10 IS can even use i-Contrast in playback mode to adjust images that were shot without the setting activated.
Canon Products Red-eye Correction
Provides three options for removing red-eye from subjects in flash pictures.
1) The Red-eye Correction during shooting actually identifies and corrects red-eye in human subjects as pictures are taken.
2) The SX10 IS can be set to automatically detect and correct red-eye during image playback. 3) You can manually locate any red eyes in a scene during image playback on the LCD screen, and command the camera to remove them.

Life doesn’t give you second chances to capture special times. That’s why the SX10 IS features ISO 1600 and High ISO Auto settings that reduce the effects of camera shake and sharpen subjects in low-light situations, giving you greater shooting flexibility. ISO can be expanded to 3200 when you select ISO 3200 Special Scene mode.

With Movie Snap, you’ll never miss a perfect still shot just because you’re in the middle of shooting a movie. Simply press the shutter to record a high-resolution still. The Power Shot SX10 IS supports the MOV video format which reduces data volume by approximately 60 percent. This allows you to record longer movies while maintaining optimal image quality.
